چکیده

We have examined the relationship between rotation and activity in 14 late-type (M6M7) M dwarfs, using high resolution spectra taken at the Keck Observatory and flux-calibrated spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Most are inactive at a spectral type where Hα emission has previously seen to be very common. We used the cross-correlation technique to quantify the rotational broadening; six of the stars in our sample have vsini≥3.5 kms−1. Three of these stars do not exhibit Hα emission, despite rotating at velocities where previous work has observed strong levels of magnetic field and stellar activity. Our results suggest that rotation and activity in late-type M dwarfs may not always be linked, and open several additional possibilities including a rotation dependant activity threshold, or a Maunder-minimum phenomenon in fully convective stars.

A First Look at Rotation in Inactive Late-type M Dwarfs

Chromospheric Activity, Rotation, and Rotational Braking in M and L Dwarfs

We present results from a high-resolution spectroscopic survey of 45 L dwarfs, which includes both very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. Our spectra allow us to derive a significant number of new rotational velocities, and discover a slowly rotating (in projected velocity) L dwarf that allows more accurate measurement of spectroscopic rotations for these objects. We measure chromospheric activi...

Spectral type dependent rotational braking and strong magnetic flux in three components of the late - M multiple system LHS 1070

We show individual high resolution spectra of components A, B, and C of the nearby late-M type multiple system LHS 1070. Component A is a mid-M star, B and C are known to have masses at the threshold to brown dwarfs. From our spectra we measure rotation velocities and the mean magnetic field for all three components individually. We find magnetic flux on the order of several kilo-Gauss in all c...

The Narrowest M-dwarf Line Profiles and the Rotation-Activity Connection at Very Slow Rotation

Context. The rotation-activity connection explains stellar activity in terms of rotation and convective overturn time. It is well established in stars of spectral types F–K as well as in M-type stars of young clusters, in which rotation is still very rapid even among M-dwarfs. The rotation-activity connection is not established in field M-dwarfs, because they rotate very slowly, and detecting r...

A Photometric Variability Survey of Field K and M Dwarf Stars with Hatnet

Using light curves from the HATNet survey for transiting extrasolar planets we investigate the optical broad-band photometric variability of a sample of 27, 560 field K and M dwarfs selected by color and proper-motion (V −K & 3.0, μ > 30 mas/yr, plus additional cuts in J −H vs. H −KS and on the reduced proper motion). We apply a variety of variability selection algorithms on the light curves to...
